Academic Advising and Transfer Center

The academic advisers in the Academic Advising and Transfer Center (AATC) are the advisers for students who have General Studies as their declared major. Academic Advisers can also assist with understanding the limited and restricted entry program application process, and provide information on placement testing, degree options and general College policies and procedures. Other advising services for students include:

• Developing an education plan.
• Evaluating (unofficial) course work from MHCC and other colleges and universities. For official transcript evaluation, registered students should fill out the Transfer Evaluation Request Form.
• Creating first term schedules.
• Clarifying academic policies and procedures.
• Providing information about degree requirements and transfer options.
• Making referrals to campus resources.
• Providing demonstrations for on-line services and DARS, audit reporting system.

New Students
Click the "Start" button to apply for admission and financial aid, register for classes, purchase your books, and be ready to start the new term! The new student workshop will allow you to meet advisers, plan your first term and register for classes.

Transfer Students
If you are transferring to MHCC from another college or colleges, please come to the AATC and bring your unofficial transcript(s) for course placement recommendations. After you have registered for your first term at MHCC, send your official transcripts to the Admissions & Records Office and fill out the Transfer Evaluation Request Form.

Continuing Students
Students who have General Studies as their declared major, or who are on the path to applying for a Limited/ Restricted entry program are encouraged to meet with an adviser from the AATC to create an education plan. Continuing students in declared majors or specific programs are advised by their faculty program advisers each quarter.

To make your advising session as productive as possible:

• If you are a new student, complete the admissions application, college placement test and new student workshop. The workshop is designed to help you understand the basics of using MyMHCC to help you plan your courses and show you how to register.
• If you are a student with previous college experience, bring to the AATC any transcripts and course descriptions you have from other colleges or universities. This will help us determine what proficiencies and prerequisites may have, and determine if you need to take all or portions of the College Placement Test.
• Become familiar with your degree requirements by viewing the MHCC catalog.
• Spend time working out a sample schedule for the upcoming term. You know best what days and times you are available to take courses.
• If you're planning to transfer, research different colleges and universities.
• Make a list of your questions. Front desk staff at the AATC can often answer your questions!
• If you're planning on completing one of MHCC's programs of study, be sure to contact that department and meet with the program's advisor, rather than coming to the AATC.

Changing Majors
If you wish to change majors, you should do so officially in the Admissions office or the Academic Advising and Transfer Center. This way we can ensure you are assigned another adviser who will match up with your new major, and keep your MHCC records up to date.

Changing Advisers
All students have the option of changing their advisers based on their personal preferences. Each person is unique, and some personality types work better together than others. All you need to do to change your adviser assignment is to come to the AATC and make the request at the Intake Desk.
