Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a program designed to support and increase the academic persistence of students from as early as the elementary school level through college. Therefore, the AVID Program extends its services from grades 4-16 with the belief that educational growth does not end once a student graduates from high school.
AVID for Higher Education supports students by placing them in Learning Communities or Cohorts, which means that they take classes with the same group of their peers. As part of this cohort model, students are also enrolled in a College Success course (HD100) which focuses on effective note-taking, organizational, time and stress management skills, and reading and writing strategies. There are also opportunities for tutoring, advising support, and skills workshops through the AVID Center in AC3315.
In addition to student support, the AVID Program also promotes Professional Development opportunities for Staff and Faculty in High Engagement Teaching Strategies and Techniques to support learners of all different skill levels.
AVID is a worldwide program, with over 4,800 sites around the world (48 States and 16 Countries/Territories). AVID began in Oregon is 2004 and is currently operating in 9 Secondary School Districts, 51 Sites and serving over 2,800 students. Mt. Hood Community College has the honor of being the only AVID for Higher Education site in Oregon.
