MHCC Head Men's Basketball Coach Geoff Gibor
Geoff Gibor embarks on his sixth year as the head basketball coach for Mt. Hood Community College. Last year the Saints returned seven sophomores and finished 20-8. The 2014-2015 season looks to be another very good year as the Saints return a few sophomores with game experience. "Having a sophomore laden team is a big factor in success in the NWAC. I know that we will be better because of the returning players and the experience they had last year. I am looking forward to working with this group, they are fun to coach and understand the importance of their academic, as well as their athletic achievements.
Gibor feels like the greatest success is what the players do off of the court. "It is important that players get along with each other and build relationships that will allow them to be successful in all aspects of their lives. These are relationships that should carry them through the rest of their lives.
Prior to being named the head coach, Coach Gibor spent ten years as the assistant coach to former coach Rob Nielson. Coach Gibor credits Coach Nielson for teaching him the importance of mentoring young student-athletes and helping them to mature. The fundamental philosophy will remain focused on solid team defense & rebounding. Mt. Hood Basketball will continue to build the entire person, while focusing on academics and athletics.
"I enjoy working in the NWAC. I have a very good feeling about the coaches in the league. The desire to win is high but the value of the game will not be compromised in order to win. This is a very tough league with a great tradition. I hope that we can continue to develop teams that will compete on the court and players who will compete on the court and in the classroom. I expect my players to go to class and graduate on time."
Coach Gibor was enlisted in the United States Navy from 1992-1996 and was stationed in Florida, Massachusetts and Maryland. He played at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon from 1996-1998.
Coach Gib enjoys his role as the Saints head coach. Gibor works part time for Vanport International as the IT Manager. Gibor serves as a part time academic advisor at Mt Hood Community College. He is also busy in his favorite role, that of husband & father to his wife Ronda & son Jordan (12 years old), "I've got a wonderful wife and she does a great job as mom. Ronda has been very supportive over our 16 years together. She enjoys the teams and considers them a part of the family.
