MHCC Head Men's Basketball Coach Geoff Gibor
Geoff Gibor embarks on his first year as the head basketball coach for Mt. Hood Community College. Last year the Saints were rebuilding with only two sophomores returning one sophomore transfer from the 2007-2008 team. Although they were a young team consisting of 12 freshman, they were able to finish the season with an 11-3 southern region record and 22-8 overall. The Saints finished 2nd in the southern region, and 8th at the NWAACC Tournament. This year looks to be another very good year as the Saints return many sophomores with game experience. "Having a sophomore laden team is a big factor in success in the NWAACC. I know that we will be better because of the returning players and the experience they had last year. I am looking forward to working with this group, they are fun to coach and understand the importance of their academic, as well as their athletic achievements.
Gibor feels like the greatest success is what the players do off of the court. "It is important that players get along with each other and build relationships that will allow them to be successful in all aspects of their lives. These are relationships that should carry them through the rest of their lives.
Coach Gibor has spent the last ten years as the assistant coach to former coach Rob Nielson. Coach Nielson really has a great understanding of the game. During his tenure, he has been an amazing mentor for me and my family. I look forward to picking up where he left off. The fundamental philosophy will remain focused on solid team defense & rebounding. Mt. Hood Basketball will continue to build the entire person, while focusing on academics and athletics.
"I enjoy working in the NWAACC. I have a very good feeling about the coaches in the league. The desire to win is high but the value of the game will not be compromised in order to win. This is a very tough league with a great tradition. I hope that we can continue to develop teams that will compete on the court and players who will compete on the court and in the classroom. I expect my players to go to class and graduate on time."
Coach Gib enjoys his role as the Saints head coach. Gibor works full time for Vanport International as the IT Manager. He is also busy in his favorite role, that of husband & father to his wife Ronda & son Jordan (7 years old), "I've got a wonderful wife and she does a great job as mom. Ronda has been very supportive over our 12 years together. She enjoys the teams and considers them a part of the family.
