MHCC to Show its Diverse Colors at 31st Annual Teddy Bear Parade
Posted: September 27, 2013
Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) students, employees and family members will join the 31st annual Soroptimist Teddy Bear Parade Sept. 28 in Gresham.
MHCC is an official sponsor and will have two vehicles with VIPs in this fun, local event as well as a number of walkers. All participants will be decked out in a diverse palette of brilliantly-colored T-shirts sporting the collage’s slogan, “Be Your Dream.”
Debbie Derr, MHCC president, will ride in a car driven by Wayne Machuca, MHCC instructor. They will be joined by Katrinia McNeal, administrative assistant, and her daughters Kalehya and Kiara, and Machuca’s daughter, Leala. The other vehicle, a shiny red truck provided by Weston Kia, will be driven by Michelle Gregory, director of community development, with passengers from the college’s Associated Student Government leadership.
This is a rain or shine event. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast by MetroEast Community Media. The parade typically hosts more than 100 entries for local schools, nonprofit organizations and businesses and features horses, buggies, bicycles, floats and wagons, each with their favorite teddy bear on display. The teddy bears are then donated to a local trauma intervention program for children.
“We are excited to support the community by participating in this longtime tradition,” says Gregory. “It is a great event that builds Gresham-style good will, while helping women and girls to realize their educational and career dreams.”
Soroptimist International of Gresham uses entry fees from the parade to fund awards and scholarships such as the Women’s Opportunity Award for MHCC students.
