MHCC Fireplace Gallery Presents Paintings that Depict ‘Old Siam’
Posted: October 29, 2014
The Fireplace Gallery at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) is hosting a free art exhibit by Fasai Streed, “The Old Siam,” Nov. 1 – 29.
She calls her collection The Old Siam because it depicts old Thai/Siamese village life, culture and traditions. There are 11 scenes in the exhibit: paddy-field, harvest, rice threshing, rice hulling, fish trap, fishing, picking oranges, picking lotus, floating market, rafting and Sunday market.
“The Old Siam is more than exquisite paintings; it is a family art, a simple way of life and a dose of nostalgia. It reminds me of my roots, my childhood and my mom," says Streed.
“I grew up with a single mom who was a teacher and a painter. She taught me to draw and paint when I was in high school in order to help her meet gallery deadlines,” she says. “I never thought that I would be a professional artist until I moved to Portland. I chose to paint about Thai village life because it reminds me of my parents’ work.
