MHCC Visual Arts Presents Mixed Feelings

The Irreverent Object

Mixed Feelings: The Irreverent Object at the Mt. Hood Community College Visual Arts Gallery celebrates the work of more than a dozen Northwest ceramic artists. This winning show features three distinctively unique themes, each of which uncovers mystery, comedy and pathos in three-dimensional objects.

Mixed Feelings

Conceptualism takes a comic turn with Ron Geibel’s playful but exacting
ice cream cone series in porcelain.
Rooted in the domestic, the artists featured in Mixed Feelings play an active part in reflecting and shaping identities through coy, subversive, or aggressive works in sculpture and vessel form. Works are by Stephanie DeArmond, Ron Geibel, Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Lauren Sandler, Shalene Valenzuela and Dustin Yager. Organized by Ron Geibel and Dustin Yager.

Tangible

Lauren Sandler transforms mundane household objects into unorthodox
earthenware sculptures.
This exhibition features sculptural work that uses raw clay, slip-dipping, and slip-casting of various found debris and household objects to explore the less accessible notions of home. Works by Leslie Macklin and Lauren Mayer. Organized by Leslie Macklin.

Shalen Valenzuela delivers a rose-covered warning with her,
“Beware of Sharp Edges: Cat Grabber”,
a slip-cast porcelain saw with silver-leaf glaze.
The final theme explores new works from six ceramic educators, two working in low fire, two at midrange, and two in high fire. Works by Lisa Conway, Kathryn Finnerty, Randy Johnston, Brian Jones, Deborah Schwartzkopf and MHCC ceramic faculty member and artist Joe Davis. Organized by Joe Davis. This part of the exhibit runs March 20 – 25.
The Irreverent Object runs March 6 – 30 in MHCC’s Visual Arts Gallery. A reception will be held Wednesday, March 22, 5 – 7 p.m. in the gallery. Staff, students and the public are invited to this free event.
Visual Arts Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; the gallery is closed weekends and holidays.
