• Rockin’ Round the Block Combines Nostalgia and Family Fun  While Raising Funds for MHCC Automotive Tech Scholarships

    On Saturday, Aug. 12, come see more than 400 stock and classic cars, listen to live rockabilly music, and browse booths by local vendors during the 19th annual Rockin’ Round the Block car show and cruise in historic downtown Gresham. This year’s theme is “Back to the 50s.”

    Proceeds from Rockin’ Round the Block support the Mt. Hood Community College Automotive Technology program’s student scholarships. Over the past 18 years, the event has raised $163,000 for MHCC scholarships.

    Activities kick off at 8 a.m. as registration and vendor booths open and cars begin rumbling into downtown for the Show and Shine. The co-located Gresham Farmer’s Market opens at 8:30 a.m., followed by an Opening Ceremony for Rockin’ Round the Block at 10 a.m. Free children’s activities, including face painting and games, run from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., and live music by Ron Ruedi and The Hurricanes starts at Noon.

    At 3 p.m., more than 50 awards and trophies are given to car show participants, followed by a raffle drawing. After the ceremony and drawing, the principal attraction: Main Street Cruise. Spectators line the streets to get a glimpse of the parade of cars as cruisers honk, beep and roar their way through historic Gresham.

    The Gresham Area Chamber of Commerce estimates that Rockin’ Round the Block brings more people to downtown Gresham than any other annual event. More than 10,000 spectators are expected to turn out for the event and festivities.

    Rockin’ Round the Block is a free event to attend. Car show participants can register their vehicles for $15 by Thursday, July 27, and $20 after July 27 up until the day of the event.
