Mt. Hood Community College is encouraging new students to get a start on their college career during Summer Bridge, an in-depth two-day student-focused experience. Bridge workshops will delve deep into content to ensure that students are well-prepared
for their classes and for college life. The Learning Specialists who run the workshops have years of experience tutoring and working with students, including first-generation students and those entirely new to the college experience.
Summer Bridge includes a panel discussion with staff,
faculty, and current and former students.“Summer Bridge is a multi-day orientation designed to teach students the tools and knowledge they are often ‘expected’ to know when they start college, but that no one ever really teaches them,” said Sarah Aimone, East County Pathways Grant Coordinator.
“Any new MHCC student who wants to feel more comfortable and prepared for that first day on campus would benefit from attending a session.”
This year, Summer Bridge offers two sessions for students attending MHCC for the first time: September 11-12 and 14-15. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and lunch is provided. Students need only attend one session.
Session workshops focus on three main areas: academic skills, like studying and notetaking; soft skills, including organization and class preparedness; and community creation at MHCC, which covers student events, clubs and resource centers. Workshops
cover a range of topics that include: paying for college, navigating financial aid, setting up your Saints email, using the MyMHCC portal, adding/dropping classes, accessing tutoring and buying books, among other subjects. In between workshops
are fun, engaging activities, such as a campus services scavenger hunt and door prize drawings.
All student participants receive a free t-shirt and binder filled with school supplies, as well as entry into a drawing with prizes that include backpacks, calculators and MHCC Bookstore gift cards. During each session, at least one laptop is given
away as a door prize too.
