  • Citation Style Guides

  • Citation styles are formatting rules for citing other authors' work within your paper and in a bibliography at the end of your paper. For an introduction to citations, try this Understanding Citations Tutorial from U Texas.

Ask your instructor which citation style you should use. There are several different citation styles, including: APA for social sciences; MLA for humanities; CSE for sciences; and Chicago or AP for publishing.

    APA (American Psychological Association) Style:
    • Citation style guide: APA Guide from Purdue OWL
    • Citation builders: BibMe or UNC Libraries citation builders, or the Citations & Bibliography tools in Word 2013
    • Citation manual: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.)
    MLA (Modern Languages Association) Style:
    • Citation style guide: MLA Guide from Purdue OWL
    • Citation builders: BibMe or UNC Libraries citation builders, or the Citations & Bibliography tools in Word 2013
    • Citation manual: MLA Handbook (7th ed.)
CSE (Council of Science Editors) Style:
    • Citation style guide: Citing Information: CSE from UNC Libraries
    • Citation manual: Scientific Style and Format: CSE Manual
    Chicago Style:
    • Citation style guide: Citing Information: Chicago from UNC Libraries and Chicago Style Guide from Purdue OWL
    • Citation builders: BibMe or UNC Libraries citation builders, or the Citations & Bibliography tools in Word 2013
    • Citation manual: Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed.)
    AP (Associated Press) Style:
    • Citation style guide: AP Style from Purdue OWL
    • Citation manual: Associated Press Stylebook

Citation style guides are directions and examples for formatting your paper and its bibliography. Citation builders are online tools that automatically format your resources in a specific style. Remember that robots sometimes make mistakes, so it's a good idea to verify your citation formats in a citation manual or guide. Citation manuals are available for in-library use at the MHCC Library reference desk.

If you have a specific question that isn't addressed here, contact your instructor. You can also ask a librarian or arrange to meet with a tutor.
