• Medical Assistant Admission Process and Application

  • The information below is based on the application requirements for Summer  2022 admission. It is provided as an example to guide potential applicants on the admission process and application requirements which may be subject to change as program criteria can change for each new application year.

Effective for Summer term 2022 application, BA131 Introduction to Business Computing will be required. CIS120L Computer Concepts Lab I is no longer accepted.

The Medical Assistant (MA) program will provide the student with a complex body of knowledge, specialized skills and practical experiences needed by a medical assistant to meet the standards for entry into the profession.

The Medical Assistant program is restricted entry and applicants to the program must meet certain criteria before their application will be considered. The program typically starts each Summer term and runs consecutively through Winter term. Up to 24 qualified students are accepted each admission cycle. Upon completion of the program requirements, the student earns a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to sit for certification through the AMT (American Medical Technologists), NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) and the NHA (National Healthcare Association). We highly recommend you attend an information session to learn more about our program. The dates are posted at: https://mhcc.edu/MedicalAssistant.

Accommodations - People requiring accommodations due to disability should contact Accessible Education Services at 503-491-6923 or aes@mhcc.edu.

Admission of all students is centralized in the Admissions, Registration and Records office. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to the Medical Assistant program. The Admissions, Registration and Records office has the sole authority to inform students of their admission status.

Admissions criteria, deadlines and prerequisite requirements are subject to change from year to year. The previous year's application information is posted only as a resource. It is the responsibility of the applicant to be informed and adhere to all requirements, procedures and deadlines. New applicants as well as applicants from previous years must complete the entire application process.

Mt. Hood Community College reserves the right to modify the criteria and the process for selection.

Any application submitted after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis at the discretion of both the Health Professions and the Admissions, Registration and Records office.

The Admissions Evaluator has the final authority on what constitutes equivalency for all admission criteria. If you have questions regarding admission requirements and procedures, please email LRadmissions@mhcc.edu. For questions about the program, please contact the program director at JeanAnne.Parker@mhcc.edu.

    Interview and Selection Process

Up to 60 candidates will be interviewed. If there is an insufficient applicant pool, applicants with courses in progress may be invited to an interview but priority consideration is given to students who have all prerequisites completed by the end of Winter term 2022. The group interview session consists of a written and an oral portion. During the interview we will be looking for the following: motivation, tolerance of stress, integrity/work ethic, deportment, application of general knowledge, communication, and professionalism.

From this selection process, up to 24 qualified applicants are admitted to the Medical Assistant program. The next 10 candidates are placed on an alternate list. Alternates are offered a position in the program only if any of the first 24 candidates decline their position in the program. Alternates will be notified if space becomes available—please do not inquire about your status. Conditional acceptance may be considered for those applicants enrolled in prerequisite courses for Spring term 2022. Conditionally accepted applicants must complete all prerequisite coursework with a grade of “C” or better.
