    Mt. Hood Jazz Festival Returns to Mt. Hood Community College with Grammy-Award Winning Artists

    The Mt. Hood Jazz Festival has recently concluded its three-day event at Mt. Hood Community College from May 5-7, 2023, with a fantastic turnout of jazz enthusiasts from various high school and middle school jazz bands, as well as other music lovers in the area. The festival boasted a star-studded lineup of jazz performers, featuring Grammy Award winners such as the Ignacio Berroa Trio, Bill Charlap Trio, and Michael Dease.

    On April 20, 2022, the Board of Education approved an official board statement in support of our LGBTQ+ Community. This is our Board’s public declaration that loudly proclaims and reinforces that MHCC is not only a welcoming institution, but that we stand firmly against acts of harm to traditionally marginalized communities, most recently those harming the LGBTQ+ community who have recently seen their civil rights challenged through multiple legislative actions across our nation.

    Andrew Jackman comes to us with 15 years of experience including work in aquatics, general recreation, finance and emergency management. A special thanks to our community partners, Dennis Baker, Mike Riegelman and Lynn Snodgrass, for serving on MHCC’s recommending hiring committee. Andrew's first tasks include a full assessment of the Aquatic Center, connecting with the community, and hiring/training new Aquatic Center staff for our pools’ much-awaited reopening.

    Mt. Hood Community College has been honored with an Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This is the highest form of recognition for government accounting and financial reporting. MHCC’s annual financial report has received this award for the past five years.

    MHCC Wins $100,000 Rethink Adult Ed Challenge Award for Pre-Apprenticeships

    Mt. Hood Community College is excited to announce that the Department of Education awarded the college $100,000 through the Rethink Adult Ed Challenge. This award will fund new pre-apprenticeship programs to help English language learners build academic, language and workplace skills. Through the programs, MHCC will provide career pathways to immigrants, refugees and adults learning English, while meeting local industry employment surges.

    MHCC Receives $3 Million to Establish a Basic Needs Response Center

    We are excited and grateful to announce Mt. Hood Community College will receive $3 million in funding from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. This act is supported by Oregon’s U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure community colleges have the resources they need to provide students with a quality learning environment during this difficult time.

    MHCC Summer Hours July 16 through September 3

    MHCC’s summer hours begin the week of July 12 and end the week of August 30. During summer hours, regular hours of operation with full student services will be limited to Monday – Thursday to optimize our hours of operation. This means almost all areas will be closed on Fridays.

    Three MHCC Transitions/Transiciones Students Receive Ford Family Foundation Scholarships

    Founded by Kenneth and Hallie Ford in 1957, the foundation supports rural communities in Southwest Oregon, and has since grown to help students from across the state to overcome socioeconomic and other traditional barriers to finishing college degrees. Students are selected through a rigorous process on the merits of their academic potential, character and commitment to give back to their communities. The scholarship covers 90% of educational costs from the college’s cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room and board, personal costs) for up to $40,000 per year.

  • New Computer Science Program Helps Students Earn 4-Year Degrees

    The field of computer science is a rapidly growing sector offering high salary potential and jobs in a variety of different industries and roles. According to 2018 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for software developers can vary from $108,000 to $118,000, depending on the industry that they work in (i.e. manufacturing, engineering services, finance, insurance, etc.).

    Seeing the Invisible Universe

    In recent years, we’ve made incredible discoveries in astronomy by viewing the sky outside the range of visible light. On the ground, we’ve built an array of radio telescopes designed to show us exactly how the universe’s new stars form and grow. We’ve launched telescopes into orbit around Earth that allow us to view space using other forms of light, forms typically absorbed by our atmosphere. The images that we’ve taken with these new telescopes – both on Earth and from space – have provided never-before-see glimpses into our universe and led to important advancements in science.

    Mt. Hood Community College’s Forensics team won the Silver Medal for Division III schools at this year’s Northwest Forensics Conference, held last February. The team also took home a second-place sweepstakes honor for Division III Debate and Individual Events for the 2017-18 season.

    March Planetarium Preview: Shockingly Strange Solar Systems: Discoveries of Planets Beyond Our Sun!

    Up until recently, astronomers knew little to nothing about planetary systems outside of our own. However, in 2009, NASA launched the Kepler space telescope and our knowledge of distant planets and solar systems grew astronomically. And although the space telescope could not closely observe individual planets, it was able to detect thousands of celestial bodies and determine their sizes, distances from central stars, and much more – based simply on the light intensities of the stars that they orbited.

    The fifth annual peace and nonviolence conference at Mt. Hood Community College will take place April 12 in the Student Union. The event – titled the “Peace and Justice from the Heart Conference” – will include a Native American drum circle, talks by local peace activists, and a student contest for the best essay on a peace or social justice-related topic.

    MHCC Planetarium Preview: Black Holes, Nebulae and Other Really Strange Star “Ghosts"

    Some of the strangest events in the visible universe occur as a result of stars dying. These include neutron stars – or even black holes – left behind by powerful star explosions. Other stars never explode at all, but they leave behind compact corpses (called white dwarfs) surrounded by complex colorful patterns. Plus, the ghostly debris left by dying stars can become important ingredients for making future stars and planets.

    MHCC Receives $2.1 million Grant from US Department of Education

    Mt. Hood Community College has been selected to receive a US Department of Education Title III grant totaling more than $2 million under the federal government's “Strengthening Institutions Program,” which provides resources to aid colleges in serving low-income students. MHCC will receive approximately $430,000 each year for what is anticipated as a five-year grant. The first distribution of funds is expected on October 1, 2016.

    MHCC has partnered with Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan to bring Japanese students to the Gresham area as an exciting way to share American culture and the English language. More than a dozen students will be visiting in early 2016 and the college is seeking local area families who would like to act as host to a student.

    Mt. Hood Community College Planetarium Expands Show Dates for 2016

    Mt. Hood Community College Planetarium director Pat Hanrahan is back from his sojourn in Africa and has expanded the Planetarium's show schedule due to increased demand from the community. Now, each show will be available across two days, instead of one, including being presented on both the first Tuesday and second Thursday of each month.
  • Sinkhole List

    Sinkhole disrupts traffic around MHCC

    Record rainfall opened a sinkhole on Kane Road between 23rd and 17th street on the afternoon of December 7, and subsequently the road is now closed to through traffic. Road repairs are expected to start soon, but the road is expected to be closed into the new year. Mt. Hood Community College is still open and operating under regular business hours, but access to the college has now changed due to detours around the area.

    Mt Hood Community College Board of Education Votes to Provide Immediate Tuition Relief to Students for Fall

    In an effort to help offset the growing costs related to higher education, the Mt. Hood Community College Board of Education voted Wednesday September 9, 2015 to reduce the cost of tuition at MHCC by $1.50 per credit hour. This reduction will take place beginning this fall, 2015, and would save the typical full-time MHCC student about $20 per quarter.

    Mt. Hood Community College Teams up with iUrban Teen to Create iCode

    Getting teens interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) - related classes can be difficult, especially so for teens who lack access to vital pieces of technology, such as to computers or the internet. Since 2011, iUrban Teen, a national non-profit organization, has enrolled low-income minority teens in an effort to engage them in STEM programs through a hands-on approach.
