    Communications Intern-Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon (MHAAO)

    Job Summary: The Communications Intern will work under the supervision of the Marketing, Communications, & PR Manager (MC&PR Mgr.) and assist them in increasing awareness of and bringing positive attention to MHAAO through building public awareness and support for the mission.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    The Communications Intern’s primary responsibility is to assist in promoting and supporting the organization’s public image through:

    • Increasing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) via writing and editing regular blog posts and website updates
    • Generating topic ideas for blog posts
    • Discussing and prioritizing content with the MC&PR Mgr.
    • Updating a content calendar (Trello) with an ongoing list of scheduled blog posts and website content changes.
    • Working with MC&PR Mgr. to script, storyboard, and produce videos for web and social media content

    Job Summary: The Mental Health & Addiction Association of Oregon (MHAAO) is seeking a highly energetic Content Creator Intern to create static and dynamic visual content for MHAAO’s internal and external communications efforts. In collaboration with the Marketing, Communications, & PR Manager (MC&PR Mgr.), the Content Creator Intern will develop content with engaging multimedia components for marketing and social media campaigns, newsletters, internal communications, and more. You will work with internal and external stakeholders at the direction of the MC&PR Mgr.

    Candidates for this internship must have a passion for visual storytelling and a history of creating compelling static and dynamic content. This internship requires the ability to communicate value-oriented stories through various mediums that resonate with the intended audience(s). The successful intern will be a self-starter who demonstrates a high degree of proactivity, works well in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, understands the basics of visual communication, and is capable of working with a variety of content creation platforms.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    The Social Media Content Creator Intern’s primary responsibility is to assist the MC&PR Mgr. by creating graphics and multimedia content through:

    • Gathering project requirements (sizes, color schemes, mood or feel, necessary elements, file types, etc.) for needed content
    • Draft and edit content for final publication using multiple platforms and software tools including, but not limited to, Canva, Krita, Google Slides, and Inkscape
    • Collaborate closely with the MC&PR Mgr. and other interns to develop high-quality content for a wide variety of uses
    • Ensure content is in alignment with organization branding
    • Aid in developing and maintaining an in-house media archive to ensure all MHAAO-generated content is stored in a consistent and accessible manner, and that all third-party content is used in a manner consistent with its licensing

    Join a two-person team of IT professionals supporting instructors, secretaries and administrators using both Apple and Windows devices. Work 10-15 hours per week, scheduled around your classes. Examples of the tasks you can expect:

    • Perform Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrades

    About MESA

    Oregon MESA is working to close the opportunity and achievement gaps in science and math for students underrepresented in STEM. MESA is a non-profit hosted at the Portland State University-College of Engineering and Computer Science; MESA equips underrepresented students with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), invention, and 21st-century skills. MHCC is launching our own MESA Regional Center in fall 2019.

    Position Overview
    The Family Engagement Assistant is a university undergraduate or graduate student who supports MESA Families and Students with resources and connections necessary to access STEM fields. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in event coordination, partner engagement, and community outreach. This position works 50% onsite at the Oregon MESA office at Portland State University and 50% offsite at events held in MESA Schools in Multnomah County.

    Responsibilities

    • Build relationships with MESA families through regular phone calls, text messaging, and in-person communication
    • Recruit Families to participate in MESA events, such as Family Nights, Demo Day, and Family Advisory Committees
    • Coordinate event logistics and staffing for Family events
    • Travel to Family events and host activities (school outreach nights, MESA Family Nights, and MESA Parent Advisory Committee meetings)
    • Track, administer, and submit event data (RSVPs, attendance, surveys, etc…)

    Oregon MESA Mentor

    About MESA

    Oregon MESA is working to close the opportunity and achievement gaps in science and math for students underrepresented in STEM. MESA is a non-profit outreach program that serves historically underrepresented populations. MESA is hosted by the Portland State University-College of Engineering and Computer Science and equips underrepresented students with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), invention, and 21st-century skills. MESA is supported by five regional centers serving students in over 40 schools in Multnomah, Marion, Clackamas, Washington, and Klamath Counties. Mentors report to the MESA Regional Centers within each of these regions.

    About Mentor Program
    MESA Mentors work with a teacher (MESA Advisor) to guide 6-12th grade student inventors at MESA schools in the East Multnomah County area. Mentors will act as role models and help students with their invention projects during weekly after school meetings, hosted at local schools or virtually by MESA Advisors. Mentors will partner with a STEM professional to support students in their project needs. Mentors primarily serve during the academic school year, Oct. - May with training starting in September.

    Mentors will be placed in MESA schools throughout East Multnomah County. Interviews will begin mid-September. First round of placements will take place at the end of September for the 2021-2022 school year. Work will be in-person this year, with some sites using a hybrid model depending on school district guidelines.

    Job duties include:

    • Serve as a point of contact between Oregon MESA and your chapter
    • Support students with invention and engineering projects
    • Research curriculum and activities for MESA teachers as needed
    • Act as support for Advisors in managing and processing student paperwork, attendance rosters, and with the transport or distribution of materials
    • Attend trainings that Oregon MESA holds on an ongoing basis
    • Assist MESA staff in planning, preparing, and managing special events
    • Create and give a presentation on how you chose your college & major, and what you are doing in school (research, etc) to prepare yourself for your intended career.

    Take note that this position primarily serves in the academic school year (Sept. - May), and that mentors who are hired in this recruitment wave will be expected to incorporate mentoring with us throughout the upcoming year's classes. This position will have orientation upon hire and additional paid training. Oregon MESA is following ODE guidelines on virtual programming and mentors will be required to comply with those guidelines.
