Hard Work and the American Dream

Born in Thailand, Nee moved to the US with her husband in 2012 to be a full-time caregiver for her American mother-in-law. In those caregiving moments, Nee, realized she felt passionate helping others. Nee first attended Mt. Hood Community College in 2015 when she started her nursing career first as a certified nursing assistant in 2015 followed by a licensed practical nurse the following year. Sadly, Nee lost her husband in 2016 and her financial security changed, so she had to pause her academic career.

“It can be a difficult balance when trying to go to school, earn high grades to enter a competitive program, and also work enough hours to pay the monthly expenses,” she said. “Because I do not have unlimited time, I commit myself to being a focused and disciplined student.”

In spring 2021, Nee was able to return to MHCC to continue her studies.

The recipient of the Alfonso Torres Memorial Scholarship, Nee hopes to learn everything possible while at MHCC in her pursuit of earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing. Nee has been on the dean’s honor roll every quarter since she returned in 2021.

“The generous support from the scholarship donors gives me hope, strength, and sharpens my vision to pursue my career goal of becoming a registered nurse someday,” Nee explained.
