Students at graduation

Pre Law - After Graduation

With a degree in law, there are several careers you can explore.

Future Careers

MHCC Career Coaches are here to help you explore your career options after graduation. Below are a few common paths graduates can pursue.

Lawyers

As a lawyer, your daily tasks will include advising clients concerning business transactions, claim liability, the advisability of prosecuting or defending lawsuits, or legal rights and obligations. You will need to be skilled at analyzing the probable outcomes of cases using knowledge of legal precedents.

Arbitrators, Mediators, and Conciliators

In these roles, you will apply relevant laws, regulations, policies, or precedents to reach conclusions and conduct hearings to obtain information or evidence about the disposition of claims.

Administrative Law Judges, Adjudicators, and Hearing Officers

In such roles, you will prepare written opinions and decisions, authorize payment of valid claims, and determine the payment method.

Judges, Magistrate Judges, and Magistrates

In these roles, you will rule on the admissibility of evidence and methods of conducting testimony and preside over hearings, listening to allegations made by plaintiffs to determine whether the evidence supports the charges.

Law Teachers, Postsecondary

As a law teacher, you are responsible for preparing and delivering lectures to undergraduate or graduate students on civil procedure, contracts, and torts. You will need to keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.

Paralegals and Legal Assistants

In such roles, you will file pleadings with the court clerk and gather and analyze research data, such as statutes, decisions, legal articles, codes, and documents.

Legal Secretaries and Administrative Assistants

In these roles, you will assist attorneys in collecting information such as employment, medical, and other records and draft and type office memos.
