Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - How to Get Started

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program is a limited-entry program. This means you must meet certain criteria before you can apply. The program admits 30 students every fall and spring term. How to Apply

Now that you know the requirements, let's get started on the application process.  Below are step by step instructions on how to get your applications submitted successfully!

Please note that the information below is based on the application requirements for fall term 2023 and spring term 2024. Requirements are subject to change every year.

The next EMT cohort at Mt. Hood Community College is scheduled for spring of 2025.

Admission Requirements

We are excited about your interest in our EMT program at Mt. Hood Community College. Below are the requirements to fulfill to be considered an applicant for the program.

  • Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Physical Demand: Able to lift more than 100 pounds.
  • High School Diploma/GED® CertificateEMT licensure requires you to have a high school diploma or GED® certificate.
  • Prerequisite Requirements: You need to meet reading, writing, and math prerequisite requirements either through the College Placement Test (CPT) or course completion with a C grade or higher. Use our course equivalency tool to see if your courses from other colleges apply!

Option 1 – Placement Scores

  • Reading: Placement score into RD115
  • Writing: Placement score into WR115
  • Math: Placement score into MTH065/MTH058 or higher

Option 2 – Course Completion

  • Reading: Completion of RD090 or higher level of reading or writing-specific course
  • Writing: Completion of WR090 or a higher level of writing-specific course
  • Math: Completion of MTH020 or a higher-level math-specific course

 

Application Process

Apply for general admission to MHCC if you are new to MHCC or have not attended in the last four terms. Select AGS in Health Professions as your major. Please note it could take one to two business days to receive your MHCC ID number.

Course Placement

  • You can use CPT, Smarter Balanced, high school GPA or GED® scores for meeting the academic requirements. Self-placement is not accepted for meeting the program requirement.
  • You are encouraged to practice for the test and review English and math concepts by using Accuplacer’s free study app. CPT scores are valid for five years.

Official Transcripts

  • Official transcripts showing completed coursework that meets the academic requirements must be issued directly by the institution from where the course(s) were completed. Coursework showing as transferred from one institution to another is not accepted. Official electronic transcripts submitted via secure electronic delivery service may be submitted to [email protected]. E-transcripts cannot be sent from the student to MHCC as they are not considered official. If submitting transcripts by mail, send to:

  • Regionally Accredited Institutions: Required for prerequisite courses.
  • Non-Regionally Accredited Institutions: Not required.
  • AP, CLEP, DSST or IB Transcripts/Scores and Foreign/Non-US based Educational Transcript are required only if using for meeting the admission requirement. 
  • MHCC transcript: Not required, already on file.

The application period has closed. If applicable, please be sure to have your documents ready for uploading and transcript(s) available for entering your prerequisite courses. You must have all your documents ready. Once started, your application cannot be saved.

 

As your application gets reviewed, the status will be updated in the MyMHCC portal.

Spring Term Application Timeline
  • March 1, 2024: You may submit your application. Space is still available!
  • April 1, 2024: Spring term classes begin.

After You Apply

Your application will be evaluated for admission to the program on a first completed, first accepted basis. If the program is full, you will be placed on a waitlist. Waitlisted students are offered a position in the class if any of the accepted candidates decline their position in the program.

If you are offered a seat in the program, you must complete the following health and safety requirements and submit documentation through CastleBranch no later than two weeks before your program start term. This is required for participation in the hospital clinical shift, field internship “ride along” or becoming certified. Please note, certain misdemeanor or felony convictions may prevent you from becoming licensed or employed by an EMS Agency.

  • Complete and upload proof of required immunizations.
  • If you have completed an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR training, upload your current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or BLS card. If not, you will be required to take a course that is offered with the EMT training.

 Ninety days after the class starts, 

  • Order and schedule a background check and drug test.

You will receive specific details regarding the health and safety requirements in your acceptance offer. Failure to complete the requirements will make you ineligible for admission.

Students who complete all requirements may proceed with registration for the EMT course.

Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) reserves the right to modify the criteria and the process for selection.

Admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the EMT program. Admission of all students to the program is centralized in the admissions, registration, and records office. This office has the final authority on what constitutes equivalency for all admission criteria and the sole authority to inform students of their admission status.

Reasons for Admission Disqualification: Withholding information or providing materially misleading information and giving untruthful information to questions on the program application or during the application process could be cause for non‐acceptance or dismissal from the program. If you were admitted and then failed a required course or were dismissed from the program or any other health-related program, you may be denied admission into the program.

Previous Admission: If you were previously accepted into the program and then declined acceptance or withdrew, you will need to re‐apply to the program and will be required to meet the current program admission requirements and program standards. Materials cannot be brought forward from previous applications for a current application. Updated official transcripts are required only if new courses have been taken.
