Geographers

As a Geographer, your daily tasks will include creating and modifying maps, graphs, or diagrams, using geographical information software and related equipment, and principles of cartography, such as coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales. You will also analyze geographic distributions of physical and cultural phenomena on local, regional, continental, or global scales.

Geographic Information Systems Technologists and Technicians

In these roles, you will design or prepare graphic representations of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data using GIS hardware or software applications and maintain or modify existing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases.

Surveying and Mapping Technicians

In these roles, you will be responsible for designing or developing information databases that include geographic or topographic data and monitoring mapping work or the updating of maps to ensure accuracy, inclusion of new or changed information, or compliance with rules and regulations.

Urban and Regional Planners

In roles such as these, you create, prepare, or requisition graphic or narrative reports on land use data, including land area maps overlaid with geographic variables, such as population density. You will also mediate community disputes or assist in developing alternative plans or recommendations for programs or projects.

Cartographers and Photogrammetrists

In roles such as these, you are responsible for inspecting final compositions to ensure completeness and accuracy, and revising existing maps and charts, making all necessary corrections and adjustments.

Geography Teachers, Postsecondary

As a Geography Teacher, you will need to keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences. You will also initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
