Advising Appointment Tips

Academic advising is an important resource to help you stay on track to graduation and your career goals. The following tips will help you make the most of your advising appointment.

Before Your Advising Appointment

Complete Placement

If you're new to college, please complete your placement in reading, writing, and math before your appointment. This information is important for picking your first-term classes.

Transfer Credits

If you are transferring from another college or university, make sure to send your official transcripts to MHCC for review and evaluation before your appointment. It's also a good idea to bring a copy of your unofficial transcripts before your meeting. If you have an in-person appointment, you can bring a printed copy so your advisor can review your past courses with you.

Prepare for the Appointment

Advising needs your full focus. Please don't plan phone or Zoom meetings when you'll be driving, in a noisy place, or in class.

Think About Your College Experience

Think about what you want from your time at college. What subjects do you like (and dislike)? How much time can you spend on school each week? Do you like classes in person, online, or both? What questions or worries do you have about college? Make a list of anything you want to talk about with your advisor.

If You Have an In-Person Appointment

Arrive Early

If you're driving, you can park in any lot, but the closest one is lot D.

Please check in at the student services hub (building 12, Room AC2253) and they will direct you to your advising appointment.
