American Sign Language - Program Details

In an increasingly interdependent world, knowledge of other cultures and languages can give you an edge in your career. ASL classes at Mt. Hood Community College will teach you to communicate confidently in American Sign Language.

Learning to Sign

Many resources are available when learning American Sign Language (ASL). And at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC), we can help you develop the skills necessary for real-life communication. All classes are highly interactive.

Program Outcomes

After completing this program you'll be able to:

  • Apply effective communication strategies in ASL across various contexts, including educational, social, and professional settings.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interpret and translate between ASL and English accurately.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and awareness in interactions with Deaf individuals.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in expressive and receptive skills in ASL.
  • Understand the educational needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in diverse settings.

Courses and Curriculum

By the end of your second year, you should be able to communicate in basic ASL. Modern Language degree courses can be used toward the Arts & Letters and electives requirements for your associate degree. They can also be used to fulfill university transfer requirements. You can work with your advisor to select the best courses to meet degree requirements and your interests.
